Weak hair can be brittle and prone to breakage (hair texture image by Xavier MARCHANT from

Data from the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery shows that the number of hair restoration surgeries performed each year has been increasing dramatically each year since 2004. However, surgery is not necessary to restore hair to its youthful fullness. Weak hair can result from many factors. Take a two-pronged approach to stop weak hair from falling out: hair-loss prevention and hair strengthening, neither of which need to be surgical procedures.

  1. 1

Avoid tight hairstyles such as braids, cornrows and high ponytails, because prolonged tension on the hair can result in damage at the roots.

  2. 2

Stop using any products containing alcohol or harsh chemicals on your hair and scalp. These ingredients can irritate hair follicles and cause structural damage. Switch to herbal products instead.

  3. 3

Stop heat styling whenever possible and use heat-protection and leave-in conditioner to nourish hair when heat styling is necessary.

  4. 4

Never use uncovered metal clips or elastic bands, because removing them can pull and break your hair.

  5. 5

Spend 20 minutes each day relaxing. Stress can cause hair to enter the telogen, or resting, phase, meaning that production of new hair is stalled.

  1. 1

Eat a balanced diet. Get the recommended amounts of copper, essential fatty acids, pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), riboflavin (vitamin B2), zinc and biotin; deficiencies of these vitamins can result in hair loss and weakness.

  2. 2

Take 2 teaspoons of organic apple cider vinegar in a glass of water morning and night to encourage healthy hair growth.

  3. 3

Take 2 teaspoons of blackstrap molasses each day to restore colour and fullness to your hair.

  4. 4

Lean forward and tip your head down so that your hair hangs toward the floor. Use a boar bristle brush to gently brush the hair from root to tip all over, then stand up straight and brush as normal, applying slight, consistent pressure to the scalp. This will decrease hair shedding and stimulate the follicles.

  5. 5

Mix 1/2 cup of aloe vera gel with 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper and apply liberally to dampened hair. Massage it into the scalp and leave for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing with cool water. Repeat once a week to encourage healthy circulation in the scalp and strong hair growth.
