Iomega Zip drives are a convenient way of storing and accessing your digital data and projects. The cartridges are durable and information writing and access is fast. While not as widely used as during the mid-1990s when they were most popular, the Zip drive is still a useful tool. If you have a 250MB Zip Drive that you want to use in Ubuntu Linux, you can install it in just a few clicks.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Click "System" and then "Administration" in Ubuntu's desktop menu bar. Click "Synaptic Package Manager" to launch a vast software repository. Package Manager has access to thousands of applications, software patches and drivers.

  2. 2

Type "jazip" into the search box. Right-click on "jazip" in the search results and select "Mark for Installation." Click the "Apply" button and allow Synaptic to download and install the application. Jazip creates a system mount point for your Zip drive, similar to a CD or USB device.

  3. 3

Plug in your Zip drive, insert a Zip disk and restart your system. Click "Places" and open "Computer." You should see your Zip drive mounted and accessible as an icon in "Computer."
