A custom-made or store-bought canopy is the perfect touch to top off your elegant four-poster canopy bed. These canopies come in an array of colours for beds size twin to California king, and slide over the top of your four posts for a snug fit. Purchase matching curtains to hang at each post or slide across the sides and foot of the bed to turn your bed into a romantic and private space.

  1. 1

Select a canopy to top off your four-poster canopy bed. Choose a colour complementary to the hues in the room; take into consideration the room's wall colours, carpet colours and the finish of your canopy bed. Muted fabric colours or white are a good bet. Mimic designs in the room such as stripes, paisley prints or damask prints for an elegant touch.

  2. 2

Purchase four fabric curtains to match the fabric canopy top. Choose curtains made for the rods on your bed; they should come with rings that will clip into the tops of the curtains and slide across the poles connecting your four-poster canopy bed.

If your bed lacks poles connecting each of the posts, you can purchase connecting poles specifically designed to attach to a four-poster canopy bed. Install according to instructions and hardware (nuts, bolts and brackets) that come with the package using a wrench to tighten the bolts.

  3. 3

Place the canopy top over each of your four posts, pulling down on each corner until it is all the way on the posts.

  4. 4

Clip the curtain rings through the grommet holes at the top of the canopy curtains. Attach the rings to the posts so that one curtain hangs on each side of every post, equalling eight curtain panels.

Tips and warnings

  • Skip the back curtain panels to cut down on costs; a total of six curtain panels will pull across to cover the sides and foot of your canopy bed.
