A bicycle front derailleur is a device for shifting a chain onto a collection of front gears known as chain rings. Like other front derailleurs, the Shimano Deore LX derailleur attaches to the lower portion of the bicycle seat tube. The chain passes through a part of the derailleur called the derailleur cage. For accuracy in shifting, the derailleur and derailleur cage must be positioned at the correct height and angle to the chain rings.

Instructions

  1. 1

Locate the small screw that connects the two plates that form the Shimano Deore LX derailleur cage. Usea Phillips screwdriver loosen and remove this screw.

  2. 2

Separate the cage plates and fit the cage plates around the bicycle chain. The chain will pass through the cage.

  3. 3

Use the Phillips screwdriver to replace the small screw that connects the two cage plates, enclosing the chain.

  4. 4

Use a 5mm Allen key to loosen and remove the pinch bolt from the Shimano Deore LX derailleur clamp. The clamp will secure the derailleur to the bicycle frame seat tube.

  5. 5

Open the clamp and slide the clamp around the seat tube. Position it just above the chain rings.

  6. 6

Replace the clamp bolt and use the 5mm Allen key to tighten the bolt just enough to keep the clamp from slipping. The bolt should still be loose enough to allow the position of the clamp and derailleur to be adjusted as needed.

  7. 7

Push the Shimano Deore LX derailleur cage out over the largest front chain ring. Check the clearance between the cage and the chain ring. Parktool.com recommends between 1 and 2mm, or the width of a penny.

  8. 8

Raise or lower the derailleur to meet the recommended clearance between the cage and largest chain ring.

  9. 9

Push the derailleur cage out over the largest front chain ring once again. Looking down at the top of the cage, check that the inside of the cage is parallel to the side of the chain ring.

  10. 10

Pivot the derailleur to left or right as needed, or until the inside of the derailleur cage is parallel to the side of the chain ring.

  11. 11

Use the 5mm Allen key to tighten clamp pinch bolt, securing the Shimano Deore LX derailleur in place.
