How to Make a Bootable Disk With Nero 6
You can create bootable discs for an emergency reboot or to run large applications. (cd's image by Horticulture from Fotolia.com)

You can use a bootable disc to reboot your computer's operating system in emergency cases or to run large programs. Nero 6 allows users to create bootable discs, provided their computer supports a few functions. You must have administrator permissions on your computer to openly access drives, which is necessary for creating bootable discs. If the files you want to burn on the disc exceed 640 MB or 700 MB, Nero will not allow you to create a bootable disc because data over those limits will not fit on a CD.

Instructions

  1. 1

Place a blank data disc into your computer's optical drive and start up Nero.

  2. 2

Go to the File menu and click the "New" button.

  3. 3

Press the "Boot" tab and click the "CD-ROM (Boot)" icon.

  4. 4

Specify in the upper corner of the "Boot" tab if the bootable disc will come from drive image files or a logical drive. A logical drive is a local drive on your computer, like the main hard drive, while image files contain a drive's information, snapshot by snapshot, like images.

  5. 5

Press the "New" button to open the compilation window.

  6. 6

Select "New File Browser" on the View menu.

  7. 7

Click on the required files in the file browser and drag them to the compilation window.

  8. 8

Press the "Write CD" button and then select any additional check boxes required for your bootable disc in the "Action" section. Avoid checking the "Finalize CD" check box because this action places a write protection on your disc and makes it non-rewritable for future use.

  9. 9

Click the "Burn" button to begin the burn process. View the burn process progress in the status window and click the "Discard" or "Close" button to close the window after the burn process finishes and the disc automatically ejects.

  10. 10

Remove and reinsert your disc and click on the "CD Info" icon in Nero to view the files on the bootable disc.

Tips and warnings

  • If "Write CD" option is not available in step 8, click within the compilation window to open the "Write CD" dialogue box.
