Making a handmade card for a friend or a family member is a thoughtful gesture. Create a spin-the-wheel card that will allow the recipient choose his or her birthday present. Young car enthusiasts will appreciate receiving a birthday card with a spinning tire, and this card can made as realistic or as whimsical as you wish. Designing a wheel shaped card is something anyone can do with supplies they have at home, and children will enjoy making this simple craft.

Instructions

  1. 1

Trace around a lid that is 4 inches in diameter by placing it on a sheet of card stock.

  2. 2

    Cut out the circle shape.

  3. 3

Use a ruler to divide the circle into six congruent segments, just like a pie.

  4. 4

Write a birthday present option in each one of the segments. Use a pencil so you can correct any mistakes. Draw a small circle around each option.

  5. 5

Use coloured pencils to shade each segment of the circle a different colour. Do not colour over the present options surrounded by small circles, however.

  6. 6

Trace over the pencil text for the present options with various colours of permanent markers, or use black to make them more visible.

  7. 7

Fold a sheet of card stock in half to make the body of the card.

  8. 8

Use a ruler to draw an arrow two inches long on the top portion of the card.

  9. 9

Attach the circle form to the body of the card by manually punching a brad through both. Open the card and fold back the prongs of the brad to secure it to the body of the card. Brads are made out of flexible metal and look similar to nails, but have two metal ends that can be separated and bent back. Purchase brads at office supply or craft stores.

  10. 10

Spin the wheel to make sure it rotates properly. Use the arrow at the top of the card to indicate the birthday option on which the wheel "lands."

  11. 11

Write a message on the inside of the card.

  1. 1

Make the circle form as previously described, then cut out the circle.

  2. 2

Select a second lid two inches in diameter, place it on the larger circle and trace around it. This will create the rubber part of the tire.

  3. 3

Use a ruler and a reference photograph to determine how many spokes you would like on your tire. Keep in mind this is a craft suitable for children, so the tire can be drawn whimsically or realistically, according to your preference.

  4. 4

Colour in the tire portion of the circle with coloured pencils.

  5. 5

Fold a sheet of card stock in half to make the body of the card.

  6. 6

Attach the tire cut-out to the body of the card with a brad following the same method you used for the spin-the-wheel card.

  7. 7

Write a message on the inside of the card.

Tips and warnings

  • Always centre the circle form on the body of the card before inserting the brad.
  • Make the hole for the brad by manually inserting it firmly into the card stock.
