Changing the Subscriber Identity Module, or SIM, card in your Lenovo ThinkPad T400 laptop lets you change the wireless network or mobile broadband account associated with the wireless wide area network card installed in the computer. The 3G WWAN modem in the T400 lets you access the Internet wherever there is a mobile connection from a Global System for Mobile Communications, or GSM, carrier with which you have an account. The Lenovo T400 is not locked to a single carrier, so it can be moved between cellphone carriers as you travel, allowing for international mobile broadband access.

  1. 1

Unplug your Lenovo T400 laptop from the wall charger and all other cables.

  2. 2

Turn the computer over to access the battery.

  3. 3

Remove the battery by pushing on the sliding tab that holds the battery in place.

  4. 4

Locate the SIM card slot, which is on the inside edge of the battery slot.

  5. 5

Push in on the SIM card until you hear a "click." Release the SIM card, at which point the spring-loaded mechanism pushes the card out of the slot slightly.

  6. 6

Remove the SIM card by pulling on it with your fingers. Be careful to avoid touching the metal contacts on the bottom of the SIM card, which can damage it.

  7. 7

Push the new SIM card into the slot, with the metal SIM card contacts facing the bottom of the computer. Push the card until you hear an audible "click," at which point you can let go. Make sure the SIM card stays in the slot.

  8. 8

Set the battery back in the battery slot, starting with the inside edge that has the battery contacts. Push the battery down until it snaps into place.

  9. 9

Turn the T400 laptop over and reconnect the power and accessory cables.

  10. 10

Open the laptop's clamshell and turn on the computer. Verify wireless network connectivity after logging in to your operating system.
