Garry's Mod 10, commonly known as GMOD 10, is a popular third-party modification that was released for Valve Software's Half-Life 2 computer game. The modification features a "sandbox" style play, allowing for complete open-ended play uniquely dependent on user-created content. Garry's Mod allows users to create and destroy unique contraptions, objects and buildings, as well as harnessing the capability for users to program entire game-modes. Setting up a Garry's Mod dedicated server is done through the Steam client tools, which is a common platform for online games released by Valve Software.

Instructions

  1. 1

Download the HLDS Update Tool from Steam.com. The download link is located at the bottom of the Web page, under the "Tools" drop-down menu.

  2. 2

Install the HLDS Update Tool with the default installation settings. For the installation folder, click "Browse" and type in "C:\srcds\" in the text box. Follow the on-screen directions and click "Finish" when the installation is complete.

  3. 3

Open up the Windows Command Prompt from the Start Menu. Click "Start," "Program Files," "Accessories" and "Command Prompt." The program will begin running in a new window.

  4. 4

Type in "cd C:\srcds" and press Enter in the command prompt. Type in the following command and press Enter:

hldsupdatetool -command update -game garrysmod -dir C:\srcds

This command will update and install the files needed to host a Garry's Mod game on your server. When the installation is complete, open the "srcds" folder that you created from the Step 2 Installations.

  5. 5

Double-click on the "Orange Box" folder in the "srcds" folder, and create a new shortcut of the "srcds.exe" file in that folder by right-clicking and selecting "Send to" then "Desktop (Create Shortcut)."

  6. 6

Right-click the newly created "srcds.exe" shortcut on your Desktop and select "Properties" to bring up the shortcut properties in a new window. In the "Target:" text field, append "-game garrysmod" to the existing text. Click "OK" to close the shortcut properties window.

  7. 7

Double-click the "srcds.exe" shortcut to run your Garry's Mod Dedicated Server.
