How Do I Replace the Door Handles on a 1978 Corvette?

The 1978 Chevrolet Corvette is one of the C3 models that spanned the years 1968 to 1982. Chevrolet introduced two collector models during the 1978 model year, the Silver Anniversary model and the Indy Pace Corvette. After many years of use, the door handles may become broken and pitted requiring replacement. Replacement door handles and gaskets are available from any of the Corvette specialty parts suppliers. Follow these steps to update and repair your broken Corvette door handles.

Instructions

Things you need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Open-end wrench set
  • Replacement handles and gasket set
  • Mineral spirits
  • Lithium grease
  1. 1

Disconnect the negative lead from the battery.

  2. 2

Open the door and extend it fully.

  3. 3

Remove the screws holding on the door panel using a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the door locking knob and inside door handle.

  4. 4

Remove the panel by gently pulling the hook-and loop-fasteners off, starting in one corner and working around the lower portion of the door. Pull upward and outward to remove the panel away from the car.

  5. 5

Pull back the moisture barrier cover.

  6. 6

Locate the lock water shield in the upper door-frame area. Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the lock water shield screws and slide it away from the assembly.

  7. 7

Remove the door handle retaining bolts with an open-end wrench. Find the linkage clip at the end of the linkage rod. Push the clip half way off and remove the linkage rod. Slide the clip back in place.

  8. 8

Carefully remove the exterior door handle.

  9. 9

Connect the linkage rod to the new handle by sliding the tube-like end over the latch lever. Push the retaining clip back in place.

  10. 10

Place a new door handle gasket under the door handle and guide the push rod through the handle hole. Gently lower the handle into place.

  11. 11

Slide the rod grommets onto the rod. Install one on each upper handle rod and the door lock rod.

  12. 12

Reinstall the door handle retaining bolts.

  13. 13

Remove the door latch, using a Phillips screwdriver, to gain more access to attach the latch lever clip. Using a solvent or mineral spirits, thoroughly clean the assembly and allow it to dry. Lube all parts with lithium grease.

  14. 14

Push the clip on the lever and reinstall the door latch assembly.

  15. 15

Push the vapor barrier back in place and reinstall the door panel. Reinstall the door lock knob and inside door handle.

  16. 16

Repeat the same process on the opposite door.
