If you notice your Windows Vista or Windows 7 PC is running a bit slow, but don't feel like dishing out the extra cash to install additional RAM, you can take advantage of ReadyBoost, a feature common to all versions of both operating systems. ReadyBoost allows you to take a flash memory device such as a microSD card and use it to speed up your computer's overall performance. A microSD card using ReadyBoost requires at least one gigabyte (GB) of free space.

Skill level:

Things you need

  1. 1

Insert the microSD card into your computer's microSD card slot. If one is not available, first insert the microSD card into a microSD-to-SD adaptor and insert the adaptor into your PC's SD card slot.

  2. 2

Click the "Start" button on the desktop taskbar.

  3. 3

    Select "Computer."

  4. 4

Right-click the icon for the microSD card and select "Properties."

  5. 5

    Select the "ReadyBoost" tab.

  6. 6

Choose the "Use this device" option. Windows 7 users also have access to a "Dedicate this device to ReadyBoost" option. Dedicating the device to ReadyBoost requires all of the space on the microSD card while simply using the device allows you to manually configure how much space is used for ReadyBoost using the slider in the ReadyBoost menu.

  7. 7

Click "Apply" to save the changes and "OK" to close the window.

Tips and warnings

  • Solid-state drives do not support the ReadyBoost feature.
  • Certain microSD cards and flash devices may be incompatible with ReadyBoost.
