How to measure the depth for a wall oven
A shallow wall opening increases fire risk. (fire image by Grzegorz Kwolek from Fotolia.com)

Proper spacing allows a wall oven to function correctly. If the depth of the cabinet opening falls short of the wall oven depth, the oven will protrude beyond the face of cabinets or walls or the lack of air space behind the wall oven could result in a fire. Each wall oven manufacturer has a specified distance air gap required between the rear of the oven and combustible materials. A fire hazard results when the back of the oven rests too close to the back of your wall oven.

Instructions

  1. 1

Read the installation manual to determine the depth of the opening required for installation. You need to find the depth of the oven plus the air gap required to eliminate a fire hazard. Do not measure the physical depth of the oven.

  2. 2

Push the end of a tape measure against the rear wall of the wall opening. Note the measurement from the wall to the front of the wall oven opening.

  3. 3

Measure the opening depth at three other locations to find the average depth of the opening.

  4. 4

Compare the measured dimension with the dimension stated in the oven installation instructions.

  5. 5

Run your hand over the back of the wall opening to ensure there are no high spots to compromise the air gap for the wall oven.
