How to Open a Dell Computer Desktop

Knowing how to open up your Dell computer tower is essential if you are going to attempt to upgrade or repair your computer yourself. You will also need to open up your computer case to occasionally clean the dust off of the hardware in your Dell computer. It's also good to open up your computer and familiarise yourself with where hardware is located and how that hardware is connected to the other hardware in your Dell computer.

Turn your computer off. Unplug any cables connected to your Dell Dimension computer tower.

Place your computer tower on a flat surface. Standing directly in front of the front-facing part of your Dell Dimension computer, lay your computer on its right side. The left side of your computer should be facing up.

Turn your computer so that the back part of the computer is facing you.

Locate the cover latch along the edge of the upward-facing computer cover that reaches around to the back of the computer. Push and hold the cover latch to the right side.

Grab the right side of the cover and start to pull it back. When you get the cover pulled out a few inches, release the cover latch. Grab the cover with two hands and continue to pull the cover off and remove it.

Place the cover on a flat surface to avoid any bending or denting your cover. Your Dell Dimension computer is now open to remove and replace hardware.

Turn your computer off. Unplug any cables connected to your Dell Studio computer tower.

Place your computer tower on a flat surface. Standing directly in front of the front-facing part of your Dell Studio computer, lay your computer on its right side. The left side of your computer should be facing up.

Turn your computer so that the back part of the computer is facing you.

Locate the two thumbscrews along the edge of the upward-facing computer cover that reaches around to the back of the computer. Use your hands to loosen and remove the thumbscrews.

Grab the right edge of the cover and start to pull it back. When you get the cover pulled out a few inches, grab the cover with two hands and continue to pull the cover off and remove it.

Place the cover on a flat surface to avoid any bending or denting your cover. Your Dell Studio computer is now open to remove and replace hardware.

Turn your computer off. Unplug any cables connected to your Dell Alienware computer tower.

Place your computer tower on a flat surface. Turn your Dell Alienware computer around so that the back part of your computer is facing you.

Locate the release panels at the very back of the top of computer. Lift either the left or the right release panel to open the corresponding cover panel. The respective cover panel will open slightly immediately after the corresponding release panel is pulled. Your Dell Alienware computer is now open to remove and replace hardware.

Tip

Before beginning disassembly, it is important to discharge any static electricity that may be in your body.
