How to Connect a USB Hard Drive to a Sony DVD Recorder

Updated February 21, 2017

Sony DVD recorders equipped with a USB port can be connected to external storage devices such as a USB drive. A standard USB cable connects the devices so that digital content on the drive can be transferred to the Sony for burning to a DVD. The media can then be played on any device that supports the video format originally used to store files on the external drive, such as MPEG for digital movies.

Turn off the external hard drive and the Sony DVD recorder.

Insert one end of the USB cable, with the arrow on the plug facing up, straight into the port on the side of the USB hard drive.

Push in the plug on the other end of the cable into the USB port on the back connection panel of the Sony DVD recorder.
