How to Block Emails in Thunderbird
E-mail is the fast and easy to connect to people for business and family. (e-mail image by Hao Wang from Fotolia.com)

Blocking e-mail is a critical part of spam control and keeping your e-mail inbox organised and effective for your daily use in the office or at home. Spam can clog up your inbox and cause you to waste time sorting through your e-mail each time you log in. In Mozilla Thunderbird, there are three different options for you to block individual e-mail addresses, domain names and e-mail from people you do not know from reaching your inbox.

Instructions

  1. 1

Click "Tools" on the main menu bar, and scroll down to "Message Filters" and click to open the menu.

  2. 2

Title your filter so you know what e-mail you are setting a filter to block.

  3. 3

Click "Match all of the following" in the "From incoming messages that:" box. Select "from" in the first drop-down bar and then "is" in the second column. In the blank box of the third column, type in the email address you want to block.

  4. 4

Select "Delete message" under "Perform these actions" to erase any e-mails from this specific e-mail address instantly. Remember that you will not be able to retrieve these messages as they are permanently deleted before you can see them.

Or select "Move Message to" and then "Trash" to send the e-mails to a trash folder so you can look through them before they are deleted and remove them by hand.

Click "Match all of the following" in the "From incoming messages that:" box. Select "from" in the first drop-down bar and then "ends with" in the second column. In the blank box of the third column, type in the domain you want to block (such as @gmail.com, @mac.com or @yahoo.com).

  4. 4

Select "Delete message" under "Perform these actions" to delete any e-mails from this domain address instantly. Remember that you will not be able to retrieve these messages as they are permanently deleted before you can see them.

  1. 1

Select "Tools" from the main menu and find "Account Tools."

  2. 2

Click on "Junk Setting" in the left-hand column.

  3. 3

Check the box for "Do not mark mail as junk if send is in" and select "Personal Address Book." This will allow only e-mail from people you recognise to get through into your inbox. Unfortunately, if you do not have an e-mail saved in your address book, e-mails you may want to read might get sent to the junk folder.

  4. 4

Check "Move new junk messages to" then "Junk Folder on" and "Local Folders." This is recommended so you can go through your junk folder and make sure nothing was blocked that shouldn't be and immediately add those people to the Address Book and click the "Not Junk" button on the top right-hand corner of the email so it goes to your Inbox in the future.

In this screen, you can also choose to automatically delete Junk after a certain number of days or delete it right away.

Tips and warnings

  • Check carefully over the options you choose so you don't accidentally set filters to delete important messages.
  • If you make a mistake, you can go back through the steps to undo filters and reset default settings.
