It's fun to surprise friends in a chat room or instant message by sending them ASCII art. This form of digital art consists of numbers, letters and symbols arranged in a way to create a picture. The smiley face emoticon is a simple example of this art form. Other more complex art pieces, such as portraits or landscapes, can be created with this style as well. If you want to send your friends an ASCII picture, you can choose to create it yourself or visit an ASCII art website.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Create ASCII art in a text editor such as Notepad or TextEdit. If making your own is too difficult, find some art you like on an ASCII art website.

  2. 2

Select the art you want, click "Edit" from the menu bar and select "Copy" from the menu. This can also be accomplished by selecting the art and hitting "CTRL-C" on a PC keyboard. "CMND-C" will copy the text on an Apple computer.

  3. 3

Open your chat room or instant message software. Log into the chat. If you're using an instant message program, open a chat with the person to whom you want to send your art.

  4. 4

Click within the chat text box. In the menu bar, select "Edit" and click the "Paste" link. This will paste your art into the text box. You can also use the keyboard command "CTRL-V" on a PC or "CMND-V" on a Mac.

  5. 5

Hit the "Send" button in the chat window. This will send the ASCII art to your friend in the chat window.
