How to Hide an IP Address on Yahoo! Messenger

If you use Yahoo! Messenger and you want to hide your Internet Protocol (IP) address in order to navigate through the messenger anonymously and without attracting the attention of hackers, the best way to do this is using a proxy server. A proxy server is sort of like a third-party server that helps protect a user’s security. Proxy servers can be signed onto using websites such as Free Proxy Server, Public Proxy Servers or Microsoft’s Web browser, Internet Explorer.

  1. 1

Log on to your Yahoo! Messenger account.

  2. 2

Click “Messenger” on the top left side of the tool.

  3. 3

Click “Preferences.” Another way to get to the messenger’s preferences window is by clicking the “Ctrl” key, the “Shift” key and the “P” key simultaneously on your computer keyboard.

  4. 4

Click “Connection” on the left side of the pop-up that appears.

  5. 5

Click “Connect via Proxy Server” from the options available and select either “HTTP Proxy” or “SOCKS Proxy” if you have a third-party proxy server. If you have a third-party proxy server, then you’ll have to type in the server name, port, user ID and password for the third-party server. Note that if you use the HTTP proxy setting, then you don’t have to have a third-party proxy server account.

  6. 6

Select your Internet connection speed from the drop-down menu at the bottom of the screen and the country you live in.

  7. 7

Click “OK” when you’re ready to change the connection settings.
