How to Bypass the HP Ink Cartridge

Updated February 21, 2017

Sometimes it is necessary to bypass the ink cartridge in an HP printer to get past a number of errors or problems that may be affecting print quality or production. With most HP model printers this task is simple and involves pressing a series of buttons on the control panel. It will take about 10 minutes to perform this bypass of the cartridge alignment, and to get you back on the road to printing fine images and documents again. It is a solution to problems that occur during alignment or other service programs.

Turn on the computer and printer by depressing the power button on each one, if these machines are not already turned on. Allow time for the computer and printer to boot.

Depress "Enter" or "Set up" button (depending on your particular model of printer) on the top of the printer and hold it down while pressing the "Menu," "Options" or "Enter" button. Each model has a different type of button.

Press and hold "Setup" and the up arrow on PSC 2400 and 2500 Photosmart series printers.

Depress and hold down "Settings" and then hit "OK" on the Officejet J4500 and J4600 series printers.

Select an item to print to test the printer. No message indicator should appear if the cartridge is bypassed successfully.
