The HP ScanJet F380 normally will scan documents either when you press one of the scanning buttons on the device’s control panel, or if you select a scan option through its software on the computer. HP has explained that a number of users have been unable to complete a scan with the F380, sometimes seeing the error “An Error Occurred While Communicating With the Scanning Device” after attempting to scan a document. HP says users can alleviate the problem by installing the latest drivers and software for the scanner.

Navigate to HP’s home page and click on the “Downloads and Drivers” tab. Enter “ScanJet F380” in the empty box and press “Enter.”
Click on the operating system your computer uses. Click on the “Download” button next to the full version software and driver option, then choose a spot on the computer’s hard drive to save the software.
Double-click on the software’s icon to launch the installer. Follow the instructions in the installer, which change depending on the operating system you selected.
Unplug the printer’s USB cord from the computer if you continue to experience the same problem. Unplug a working device’s USB cord and plug the printer’s cord into the plug you were using for the other device.
Try scanning once more with the new USB connection. If the problem persists, switch USB cords and retry. Take the scanner to a repair shop if it still will not scan.
