How to Play .Mov Files in PowerPoint
Video can add a spark to Power Point presentations. (projector ready for presentation image by Dmitry Goygel-Sokol from

Video clips can liven up a presentation and hold an audience's attention more than conventional slides. Including video can seem challenging, since there are many codecs for video, and it's difficult to know which ones are supported by multimedia programs. While Microsoft's PowerPoint does not support .MOV files, with a little creativity, you can convert .MOV files to the .AVI format, which PowerPoint can play.

Skill level:

Things you need

  • A PC running Windows/2000/XP/Visa/7
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2003
  • MPEG Streamclip (see Resources)

  1. 1

    Open MPEG streamclip.

From the File menu select "Open."

Indicate which .MOV file you would like to open.

  2. 2

Once the file is open, go back to the File menu and select, "Save As." From the drop-down menu, indicate that you would like to save as an AVI.

Note carefully the name and new location of the file.

Repeat this step for every video clip you want to include.

  3. 3

    Open PowerPoint

Click on the empty slide on which you want to insert your movie.

From the Insert menu, select "Movies and Sounds." Select "Movie from File" and choose the .AVI file you just created.

    Select "OK."

  4. 4

PowerPoint will now ask you if you would like to play the movie automatically, or only when clicked?

    Choose your preference.

You should now have a rectangular box on your slide with the first screen of your .AVI movie.

Tips and warnings

  • If you would like more options for the size and quality of your video, choose "Export to AVI," instead of "Save as AVI."
