The Dell Latitude C610 is a thin Intel Pentium III-based laptop computer with a 14.1-inch screen. The Latitude C610 was released during a time in which wireless networking was still a relatively expensive luxury. Although the Latitude C610 has a slot for an internal wireless card, the card is an optional item that your computer might not have. However, if you have a Latitude C610 and the optional aftermarket wireless card, you can install the card yourself to get online without an Ethernet or modem cable.

Skill level:

Things you need

  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Mini PCI wireless card

  1. 1

Shut the Latitude C610 down and bring it to a table. Place the computer on the table facedown. Remove the battery.

  2. 2

Use the flathead screwdriver to loosen the two smaller screws on the side of the bottom rectangular cover of the Latitude C610. The screws are "captive," meaning that they can be loosened but not removed.

  3. 3

Use the Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the larger screw from the centre of the rectangular cover. This screw can be removed completely. Remove the rectangular cover and set it aside. Under the cover, you will find the two memory slots, modem slot and wireless card slot. Near the wireless card slot, you should find two thin cables with gold-coloured connectors. These are the two antenna cables. Move them so that they will not block the installation of the wireless card.

  4. 4

Hold the wireless card face up, and lower the metal connectors on the bottom slightly so that you can insert the card into the slot. After you have inserted the card fully, push the top of the card down to lock it in place.

  5. 5

Connect the two small cables to the metal posts on the front of the wireless card.

  6. 6

Place the rectangular cover back on the bottom of the Latitude C610 and screw it in place.

  7. 7

Replace the battery and return the Latitude C610 to its original location.
