You can fix most Internet Explorer errors for free. If you notice that your IE browser is acting sluggish, has numerous pop-ups, or freezes often, there are probably errors within the browser. Errors can come from viruses and registry changes. Sometimes software interferes with the browser. However, there are built-in buttons to help you fix any problem with your Internet Explorer browser. If the buttons do not work for you, you may have to reinstall the IE browser.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Open the IE browser on your computer.

  2. 2

Go to "Tools > Internet Options" on the toolbar menu.

  3. 3

Go to "Advanced" and click "Reset." The "Reset" button restores the defaults on the browser and repairs any errors.

  4. 4

Hit "Reset" again in the "Reset Internet Explorer Settings" menu box.

  5. 5

    Close and reopen Internet Explorer.

  1. 1

Go to the Microsoft Downloads page to download the appropriate version of Internet Explorer. The best method is to download the newest version of the browser (see Resources).

  2. 2

Click on the "Download" link and hit "Save." Save it to your desktop to quickly find it. Wait for the file to download.

  3. 3

Double-click on the file icon after it downloads to install Internet Explorer. Follow the instructions on your screen to customise the browser.

Tips and warnings

  • If you have customised your browser's settings, hitting the "Reset" button will erase them and set them back to the default settings.
