How to Find a London Property

London is a highly desirable place to live, combining historical charm with stylish modern amenities and a vibrant array of cultural attractions. Its many residential areas each have something to offer potential house buyers, whether you're seeking riverfront views or the buzz of the inner city. Within these areas there are properties for sale and for rent to suit all budgets, from one-bedroom flats in Clapham for £250,000 to five-bedroom houses in Mayfair for £6 million. When looking for a property in London, there are a number of things you can do to ensure your search is successful.

Instructions

  1. 1

Decide whether to rent or to buy. Consider the pros and cons of both options. A large proportion of people in London rent their properties because it gives you greater flexibility if you do not plan on staying in the property for the long term and can also be cheaper than paying a mortgage and maintaining a home. However, buying offers greater stability and the chance to hopefully make a solid investment for the future.

  2. 2

Investigate different areas. From Stratford to Wimbledon, London's many areas each have their own character. Do your research and see which areas most appeal to you. Look at the local amenities and transport links, as well as the types of properties available. If you see a property for sale or rent in an area you like, then call the agents and get the details.

  3. 3

Contact an estate agent. Estate agents are the British equivalent of real estate agents in the United States and will help you secure your ideal property. Tell them your favoured areas and they will take you to view as many suitable properties as you wish, normally for a fee of one to two percent of the property cost or one week's rent on completion of any deal. Some of the largest agencies in London include Foxtons and Winkworths, although there are many smaller agencies that deal with specific areas.

Tips and warnings

  • Do not rely on reputation, see an area for yourself.
  • Remember the property market in London moves very fast.
