How to Extend Telephone Cables

Updated February 21, 2017

Telephone wall plugs can sometimes be in inconvenient places, restricting where you can connect your phone to a few awkward locations around your home. By using a telephone extension cable, you can move your home telephone to a location that better suits you. These extension cables are simple to connect and are available at most home hardware or electronics stores.

Pinch down on the plastic pin either on the top or bottom of the phone cable with your fingers and pull the phone cable from the wall. Plug in the end of the extension cord that fits into the wall socket. You will hear a click when the cable is inserted fully. It fits only one way into the socket.

Unroll the extension cable and lead it to where you want your phone to be. Make sure to keep the cable out of places where it could be a trip hazard. Consider attaching the cable to the baseboards with plastic cable clips available from most hardware stores.

Plug the phone into the socket end of the extension cable. As with the wall socket, the phone plug fits only one way into the extension cable socket and makes a click sound when fully inserted.

Pick up the phone and listen for a dial tone. You should be able to use your phone right away if the cables are connected properly.
