While you can navigate through the files and folders of Windows XP to change your password, you also can change your password in the DOS prompt. In fact, changing the password in DOS mode may be quicker.

    Click "Start" and select "Run."

    Type "cmd" and press "Enter."

    Type "net user *" and select "Enter."

    Type the desired password at the "type a password" prompt. Press "Enter."

    Type the password again when prompted. Press "Enter." You have now reset a Windows XP password in DOS.
