Ikea is a Swedish company that produces inexpensive home furnishings. Ikea saves money by not assembling their products themselves, and passes the savings on to the customer. Once purchased, many Ikea items can be taken home in a compact car, as opposed to ready-made furniture that usually requires a delivery truck. One of IKEA's products is the Malm bed frame, which can be assembled in about one hour.
Unpack your Malm bed frame in the room where it will be used. Lay the footboard and headboard down on a carpeted area or on a blanket to keep from scratching the finish. Make sure the holes in both pieces are facing upward. Screw two metal threaded fasteners into the centre holes on each side of the headboard with the tool provided in a clockwise direction until tight. Repeat this procedure for the footboard.
Push three plastic feet into the holes provided on the bottom of the headboard. Lightly tap the feet in with a hammer if necessary. Repeat for the footboard.
Push three wooden dowels into the holes in each end of both side rails by hand. Use a helper and stand the footboard and headboard upright with the holes on both pieces facing inward. Assemble the side rails to the head and footboards by placing the dowels protruding from the ends of the rail into the matching holes in the head and footboards. Make sure the widest part of the rail is facing upward and the flat side is facing inward.
Insert two semicircle shaped fasteners into the round holes on the inside of the rail at each end. Secure the fasteners with a screw tightened into the metal threaded fasteners at each end of the rail with the tool provided in a clockwise direction until tight. Repeat for the other rail.
Attach the long metal L-shaped brackets that support the box springs to the inside of the rails with 16 to 18 screws (depending on your bed frame size) tightened with a Philips screwdriver in a clockwise direction.
Attach the small metal brackets to the centre of the head and footboards using two screws on each bracket tightened into the inward-facing holes with a Philips screwdriver in a clockwise direction. Attach the adjustable thin metal braces to the holes in the centre bracket and to the holes in the side rail L-brackets with a screw in each end tightened with the tool provided in a clockwise direction. Attach two braces to each side of the bed.
Make sure the side rails are straight and not bowed inward or outward. Attach a screw to the centre of each adjustable brace and tighten it with the tool provided in a clockwise direction until tight. Lower the large adjustable centre rail onto the metal centre brackets on the head and foot boards. Place your box spring and mattress onto the bed.
All hardware and screws come with your Malm bed frame kit. If you have a deep mattress and box springs, attach the L-shaped metal brackets to the bottom row of holes in the side rails. Use the top row of holes to attach the brackets if you have a thin mattress and box springs.
