Winamp is a multimedia player that, during the early 2000s, was recognised for its cross-format support of multimedia files. The MP4 container is typically used with MPEG-4 and H.264 codecs (the methods for compressing video data). MP4 has gained in popularity as it is the preferred format for many portable media devices, and the main compatible video format for the Apple iPod. If you want to play MP4 videos in Winamp, you need to download and install the MP4 plugin for the program.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Download the MP4 Input Plugin (for Winamp). Close Winamp first, if it is open.

  2. 2

Right-click the downloaded plugin archive and click "Extract."

  3. 3

Double-click the expanded folder that has been created. Select the file "in_mp4.dll" and press "Ctrl"+"C" to copy it.

  4. 4

Click "Start," and type "Winamp." Wait for the search to finish, then click the "Winamp" folder. Double-click the "Plugins" folder to open it.

  5. 5

Press "Ctrl"+"V" to paste the plugin into the folder. Open Winamp again and you will now have MP4 compatibility in the program.
