Power down the computer by holding the power button on for 3 to 5 seconds. This will release any excess power from your computer.
Unplug the power cord from your computer if it is plugged in and remove the battery. To remove the battery, turn over the Aspire laptop and locate the battery lock. There should be some text or small icons to indicate it. Release the lock and pull the battery out.
Place a large, soft cloth on a flat surface such as a counter. Place your Acer laptop face down with it closed on top of the cloth. This will prevent it from getting scratched or otherwise damaged.
Touch a piece of metal that is grounded with your hand such as a metal object plugged in with a ground post on the plug. This will release any static electricity and prevent damaging delicate components inside your laptop.
Remove the screw that holds the cover for your memory slots in place with your screwdriver. The cover will be labelled as "memory." Place the screw aside so that it does not get lost and pull the cover off.
You should see your memory stick or sticks inserted in their slots. If you do not you did not open the right compartment and will need to replace the cover you removed and locate the correct one.
Press down gently on the back end of your top memory stick and release. Your memory stick should pop up at an angle. You may only have one depending on whether your Aspire has been upgraded.
Grasp the side edges of the memory stick and pull up and out from the laptop. It should slide out of the slot that it fits into.
Grasp the edges of your new memory stick and slide it into the slot where you removed the other one. Gently push it in until it stops.
Push down on the back edge of your memory stick gently until it clicks into place. If you are replacing two memory sticks repeat steps 7 through 10.
Replace the memory compartment cover and insert the screw into its proper hole where you removed it. Tighten the screw into place with your screwdriver.
Power on your computer and start your operating system to ensure that the new memory in your Acer Aspire is working.
