How to fix a loose laptop key
A loose laptop key can be fixed. (laptop image by Manika from

Keys are the letters or numbers on a laptop keyboard. They are held into place with a small plastic piece called the key retainer. The key retainer holds the keys firmly in place on the laptop keyboard. Over time however, keys can become loose. They can become loose for many reasons such as frequent use, liquid spills on the keyboard, or small children hitting the keys. Some of the reasons are avoidable, but others are not. However, if the key becomes loose or falls off, it can easily be fixed.

  1. 1

Gently lift the loose key and the key retainer off the keyboard. If needed, a butter knife or other flat-edged item may be used to gently lift the key and retainer. Do not loose the key retainer.

  2. 2

Remove the key next to the removed key on the keyboard. Look at the positioning of the key retainer.

  3. 3

Position the key retainer on the originally loose key in the same manner the key retainer is positioned on the other removed key.

  4. 4

Place the key cap, or key, over the retainer key and snap back into place. Complete this process for both keys.
