Initially, the Internet Explorer 8 web browser is set up to use Microsoft Outlook as its default e-mail client. Outlook is ready to handle all your e-mail needs and is easily integrated with other Microsoft programs you are using. In some cases, however, you may want to use alternate e-mail clients with the web browser. Internet Explorer 8 makes this switch simple.

Instructions

  1. 1

Open Internet Explorer 8 by selecting the program from your computer's desktop or file manager.

  2. 2

Open the Tools drop-down menu by clicking the word "Tools" in the top toolbar of the Internet Explorer window. From this menu, select "Internet Options" to open a menu that allows you to configure security settings, privacy controls and more preferences.

  3. 3

Click on the "Programs" tab along the top of the Internet Options window, then click "Set Programs" to display a new pop-up window.

  4. 4

Click "Set program access and computer defaults" and select the circle next to "Custom" when your configuration choices appear. Once "Custom" is selected, press the downward arrows to the right to expand its options.

  5. 5

Select a new default e-mail client from your choices under the heading "Choose a default e-mail program." Any programs saved on your computer that Internet Explorer 8 recognises as e-mail clients will appear in this list.

  6. 6

Click "OK" at the bottom of the window to save your changes and return to Internet Explorer. To ensure the set-up worked, open your e-mail within Internet Explorer and see if the email client changed.
