A 12 volt, “car lighter” plug is round and can be used for all kinds of appliances with the appropriate male plug, including phone chargers, portable DVD players and video game systems. The plug wiring is not difficult as long as you ensure the power is off to the circuit and take care not to reverse the wires. If you own a camper, it’s likely that you’ll want to expand the number of available outlets in your vehicle and that means installing a 12 volt plug. Although it's not common, it's possible to use these same steps to add a 12 volt plug to a car or other motor vehicle as well.

Things you need
- 12 volt plug
- Wire stripper-crimper
Turn off the electricity to the circuit you’re installing the plug on by flipping the breaker switch.
Strip the wires half an inch using wire strippers. The wires are located on the circuit you just turned off.
Attach the black wire to the centre connector of the plug using the crimp connectors that comes with your 12 volt plug. Place the wire into the connector and squeeze very tightly with the wire crimper to secure it in place. Repeat the crimping step with the white wire in the side connector.
Flip the circuit breaker back on to begin using your plug.
