You can construct your own boxes from all types of materials, such as paper and cardboard. You can also make boxes from sheets of foam board. Foam board, also known as foam core, is a material constructed of a thin layer of foam sandwiched between two pieces of card stock. Architects use it to construct models of buildings and other structures. Crafters use it for all kinds of creative projects.

  1. 1

Decide on the height, width and depth that you prefer for your foam board box. Measure and mark two pieces of foam board that are the height and width of your box. These will be the front and back pieces. Measure and mark two more pieces of foam board that are the height and depth of your box. These will be for the ends. Finally, measure and mark two pieces that are the width and depth to form the top and bottom.

  2. 2

Cut out your pieces with a craft knife using a ruler to get a straight edge. Make three cuts for each edge of each piece. Cut through the first layer of card stock with the first cut, through the foam with the second and through the last layer of card stock with the third cut.

  3. 3

Lay the bottom piece out in front of you. Lay your end, front and back pieces around the bottom piece where they will be glued to form your box. Run a line of hot glue along the back edge of the bottom piece. Line up the back piece of your box with the edge of the bottom piece so that the back wall is in the line of glue. Repeat this process with the ends and the front.

  4. 4

Cut two strips of ribbon, each 2 inches long. Lay the top piece on top of the box. Glue a strip of ribbon running from the back of the top piece to the top of the back piece at each end of the box. This will give you a hinged top.

Tips and warnings

  • You can decorate your foam board box with paint, ribbon, fabric or any number of decorative materials from the craft store. Use craft or hot glue to attach materials such as fabric and ribbon.
