While bicycles are more environmentally friendly than automobiles, cyclists may not always know what to do with the rubber tires or inner tubes when they are no longer suitable for riding. However, some organisations do accept tires for recycling into rubber mats for use in weight rooms or horse stalls.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Contact retailers with tire or automotive centres such as Costco. The department can give you specific directions concerning deposit locations and fees.

  2. 2

Turn in your bicycle tires to a recycling centre in your community if any exist. Locate recycling centres by searching online or in the phone book.

  3. 3

Recycle your bike tires at bicycle retailers. Be sure to contact the retailer to verify that they do accept tires for recycling and to schedule a recycling appointment if necessary.

Tips and warnings

  • Even if bike retailers do not accept tires for recycling, they may be able to direct you to organisations that do accept tires.
