How to Scan a Garage Door Opener Frequency

Updated February 21, 2017

Garage doors with opener systems and keyless remotes are equipped with door-opener frequencies. These frequencies are emitted by the opener motor to work with your wireless remotes and keypads. You can scan and find the frequency with your wireless remote in just minutes and have the remote programmed with that frequency. Once on one remote, the frequency can be programmed on a number of other remotes for convenience and security.

Enter your garage with your remote opener and press the "smart" button on the back of the motor unit. The unit is on the ceiling of your garage and the "smart" button is on the back near the antenna wire.

Wait for the indicator light on the unit to start flashing to indicate an open frequency, and press and hold the button you wish to scan on your remote opener.

Wait for the main motor light to flash again and release the button on your remote. The frequency will be scanned and the remote will be programmed.
