How to Soft-Mod a PS2 Without Action Replay Max

Updated February 21, 2017

The PlayStation 2 Slim (PS2) is a popular game console whose whose operating system can be modified (or “modded”) to perform tasks Sony never considered adding. You can “softmod” a PS2 so that it will play backup copies of PS2 video game discs that you own without having to attach an Action Replay Max device. You will need the Swap Magic disc software purchased from a video game store or modification website. You will also need to temporarily disable sensors on the PS2 Slim, which can be fully restored to operation later if you should so choose.

Remove the power cord from the PS2 Slim. Lift the PS2 Slim’s cover lid.

Locate the spindle inside the PS2 Slim at the centre. Insert the toothpick into the hole to the right of the spindle. Push down on the toothpick until the spindle pops up.

Tear off an edge from the piece of paper. Wad the paper into a ball. Put the ball of paper into the hole to the right of the spindle. Cover the hole with a piece of cellophane tape.

Locate the small latch to the right of the spindle at the back edge of the PS2 Slim. Tear off another edge from the piece of paper. Wad the paper into a ball.

Put the ball of paper on top of the small latch. Tape the ball of paper down with a piece of cellophane tape.

Locate the small latch at the extreme front right edge of the PS2 Slim. Tear off another edge from the piece of paper. Wad the paper into a ball.

Put the ball of paper on top of the small latch. Tape the ball of paper down with a piece of cellophane tape.

Put the Swap Magic disc onto the spindle. Plug the power cord into the PS2 Slim. Turn the PS2 Slim on.

Wait as the Swap Magic disc begins to rotate on the spindle.

Remove the Swap Magic disc when it completely stops spinning. Replace it with a copy disc of one of your legally owned PS2 games.

Wait as the copy disc begins to spin. Select “Play” from the copy disc’s game menu when it appears on the screen to play the game.

Tip

You must replace the Swap Magic disc with the copy of the PS2 game within a few seconds or the spindle will start spinning and you will have to start all over again.

Warning

Do not remove a disc from the PS2 before the spindle has stopped spinning--you can damage the spindle.
