Butterflies symbolise peace, tranquillity, joy and encouragement. Sending a friend or a loved one a homemade butterfly card can offer just those sentiments while delighting the receiver with the quality of the craftsmanship. Creating a homemade pop-up butterfly card is a rewarding craft project that requires only a few simple items from around the house. The craft requires basic drawing or tracing and painting skills.
- Skill level:
Things you need
- Card stock paper (2 sheets)
- Craft paint
- Glitter glue or glitter paint (optional)
- Black or coloured permanent marker (optional)
- Craft glue
Prepare the card. Lay a piece of card stock paper flat on a surface. Position it so that the shorter ends are at the sides and the long edges are horizontal in front of you. Fold the card stock paper in half like a greeting card. Reopen it and set aside.
Use the other sheet of card stock to create a butterfly. Fold the paper in half. This piece will be used for a drawn butterfly that will pop up.
Draw the butterfly. Draw or trace the shape of a butterfly on the folded card stock. You will actually draw half of a butterfly--placing the centre of the butterfly against the fold of the card stock sheet. This will allow the butterfly to be symmetrical in shape. The half butterfly should take up most of the folded card stock sheet. When you cut out the drawn shape and unfold, it will be a whole butterfly. Allow room for small rectangular tabs on the wings.
Draw small rectangular tabs at the side of the butterfly wing. When the butterfly shape is cut out, there should be two tabs--one at the side of each wing. The tabs will be used for adhering the butterfly to the card.
Cut out the butterfly shape and tabs. Use the scissors to cut the folded card stock butterfly.
Unfold the butterfly, lay it flat (with folded edge up) then paint and decorate. Paint the butterfly in your choice of colours and design. Choose a real butterfly as a model or paint your butterfly whimsical colours and patterns. Use glitter glue or paint to add pizazz to the butterfly.
After the paint has dried, fold the tabs inward toward the painted side of the butterfly. Fold the butterfly in half along the original fold so that the painted design is still visible.
Attach the butterfly to the inside of the card. Add a drop of glue to each folded tab. Position the folded edge of the butterfly (the centre of the butterfly) inside the card at the outer edges of the card. This will position the tabs in the correct spots on the inner sides of the card. Close the card and press to adhere the glue on the tabs to the inside of the card. Allow to dry. When the card is opened, the butterfly will pop up.
Tips and warnings
- Use a black or other coloured permanent marker to create a borderline around the outside of the butterfly shape in order to add more definition.
