How is Handbell Music Scored?

Written by Somer Taylor

Appearance of the Score

Handbell music is scored in the same manner as piano music. There are notes on the treble clef used for bells playing higher notes (above middle C), and there are notes on the bass clef for bells playing lower notes (below middle C). Examples of scores may be seen at jwpepper.com.

Handbells

Handbells are bell-shaped instruments often made from bronze. Some well-known makers of these instruments include Malmark and Schlumerich.

More Details about Handbells

Handbells can be bought in two-, three-, four-, five-, six- or seven-octave sets. Higher notes of the octave are played on high bells and lower notes are played on bass bells. Each bell is tuned to a certain note so that when they are played in a choir, a set of bells can play a chord. They are generally heard in traditional church services, usually during the musical portion of the service or during religious music. You generally do not go to a classical music concert to hear a handbell choir.
