The choli is a shirt that exposes the back and midriff and is worn by practitioners of Indian dancing. The revealing blouse is secured with ties in the middle of the back and can cause a problem of exposure when worn with a bra. You can make a choli bra by having the support hidden within the choli fabric. With a choli bra you have the style and effect of wearing the tribal clothing and the practical support of wearing a bra.
- Skill level:
Things you need
- Well-fitting bra
- Choli shirt
- Sewing machine
- Sharp scissors
Put on a bra that fits you well. The bra should have as narrow a band in the back as possible.
Put on the choli over the bra but don’t tie it.
Have a friend pin the choli and the bra together along the vertical straps that run up your back. Make sure that the choli is covering the bra straps when they are pinned together.
Have your helper spread the ties of the choli so they are flat and hold them up against your back, so they cover the horizontal band of your bra.
Pin the right side tie of the choli to the right side of the band of the bra with the choli fabric covering as much of the bra as possible. Stop pinning the choli to the bra just before the hook and eye closure.
Pin the left side in the same way as the right, stopping just before the closure on that side.
Take off the bra and choli at the same time. Remove the clothing carefully so you don’t stick yourself with pins or cause any pins to fall out.
Sew the choli and the bra together along all of the pinned edges. Try to get the stitch as close to the edge of the choli fabric as possible.
Trim away any of the bra band that isn’t covered by the choli fabric. Use a very sharp scissors and cut as close to the sewn edge as possible.
Tips and warnings
- Use a bra in the closest matching colour to your choli that you can find to make the bra inconspicuous.
- Do not try to pin the choli and bra yourself, even with a mirror, as you could hurt yourself with the pins, and the clothing won’t be lying flat as you manoeuvre to see.
