How to clean silicone rubber

Updated February 21, 2017

Silicone rubber is a rubber-like material made from synthetic silicon elastomer. It is a compound that is used in several products including tires, sealants, baking ware, ice cube trays, utensils, insulation, cables and toys. Silicone rubber is used by many industries because it is cost-efficient, versatile and reliable. Items made with silicone rubber should be cleaned as needed with mild cleaning agents. Cleaning products containing bleach should never be used, as this can discolour and/or weaken silicone rubber. Always follow the manufacturers instructions for the specific item you are cleaning.

In a bucket, combine 1 tbsp liquid dish soap for every 2 cups of warm water.

Dip a sponge or cloth in the soapy water.

Use the sponge or cloth to wash the silicone rubber clean. Anything on the rubber should easily wipe off. If it does not wipe off, vigorously scrub in a back and forth motion to remove.

Allow the silicone rubber item to air dry.
