You may use the Motorola RAZR cell phone as a “tethered” modem for a laptop or PC with Windows XP installed. As a backup or travel modem, the RAZR is quite sufficient to connect to the Internet from anywhere in the cell phone provider’s service area. Configuring the Motorola RAZR is simple; however, the access numbers, user IDs and passwords for cell providers differ by provider. The example provided below is for the Motorola RAZR on T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T cellular services. (Consult with your cell phone provider for the correct configuration settings.)

- Laptop or PC
- AT&T Communication Manager installed (if using AT&T)
- Sprint CM Manager installed (if using Sprint)
Turn on the laptop or PC and power on the RAZR.
Connect the RAZR to a laptop or PC using the USB connector cable. (You may use a Bluetooth connector if the RAZR is Bluetooth-enabled). Allow the computer to find and register the phone. The “Find New Hardware” wizard will appear.
Click “Next” to automatically install the drivers for the RAZR to the computer. Click “Finish” when the installation has completed.
Click “Start” and then click “Control Panel” on the computer. The Control Panel page will launch.
Click the “Phone and Modem Options” icon.
Click the tab labelled “Modems.”
Click the Motorola RAZR entry, and then click “Properties” link.
Click the tab labelled “Advanced.”
Type the following exact command into the text field labelled “Extra Initialization Commands.” Include all quotes and punctuation.
Click “OK”, and then click “OK” again to save the settings and close the configuration windows.
Click “Start” and then click “Control Panel.” Click “Network Connections.”
Click the “Create New Connection” option. The New Connection wizard will launch.
Click “Next” to continue with the new connection set-up.
Click the radio button next to “Connect to the Internet.” Click “Next.”
Click the radio button next to “Set Up My Connection Manually.” Click “Next.”
Click the radio button next to “Connect Using A Dial-up Modem.” Click “Next.”
Check the checkbox next to the “USB Modem” option, and click “Next.”
Type “T-Mobile GPRS” (without quotes) in the ISP text field and click “Next.”
Type “*99#” (without quotes) in the Phone Number field and click “Next.”
Leave the “Username,” “Password,” and “Confirm Password” fields all blank. Click “Next.”
Click “Select Preference Options Below” and click “Next.”
Click “Finish”. The RAZR is now configured on the T-Mobile service as a modem.
Connect the RAZR to the computer using the USB connector cable. (You may use a Bluetooth connection if the RAZR is configured for Bluetooth.)
Click “Start” and then click “Control Panel.”
Click the “T-Mobile GPRS” icon.
Click “Dial.” The connection negotiation dialogue box will appear and notify the user when a connection is made.
Open an Internet browser on the computer and navigate the Web.
Make sure the SIM card is installed on the RAZR device and the cellular plan includes the AT&T LaptopConnect Internet data plan. The RAZR USB modem drivers are installed with the Communication Manager software, which is required when using the RAZR as a modem with the AT&T service (see Resources).
Close any synchronisation software on the device and on the computer.
Plug one end of the USB connector cable into the RAZR and the other end into a free USB port on the computer. The computer will register the RAZR as a “Removable Drive.”
Click Windows “Start” and then click the “AT&T Communication Manager” link on the computer.
Click the “GSM” tab, and then click the “Connect” button. The RAZR device will connect to the AT&T network without additional configuration. Once connected, the RAZR provides a wireless Internet connection for the computer.
Open a Web browser and download the free Sprint PCS Connection Manager (see Resources). Install the application onto the computer, but do not launch it yet.
Plug one end of the USB connector cable into the RAZR and the other end into a free USB port on the computer.
Click “Start” and then click the “Sprint PCS Connection Manager” to launch the application.
Click the button labelled “Go.” The connection is made and Internet access is provided to the computer. No further configuration is necessary with Sprint PCS Connection Manager for the RAZR.
