A leather belt can make a very sturdy guitar strap, one which you can adjust for playing while standing or sitting down. The holes are already punched in the belt for you, which should make the strap simple to adjust or remove from the guitar. It's a fairly simple project that should take under an hour to complete.

Skill level:

Things you need

  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Utility knife
  • Leather punch
  • Guitar pin strap
  • String

  1. 1

Place a measuring tape on the strap pin of the guitar, and wrap it behind you to the nut on the guitar neck. Write down the length from the strap pin to the guitar nut in inches.

  2. 2

Lay the leather belt out flat and measure it between the buckle end in the leather and 2 inches beyond the last punched hole. Adjust the measurement so it is about the same as the measurement you got in Step 1. Use a pencil to mark where you will need to cut each end of the strap.

  3. 3

Cut the buckle and any extra leather off each end of the belt where you marked it. Make the cuts at a 45 degree angle to create a bevel in the leather to smooth the cut edges.

  4. 4

Punch holes in either end if the pre-punched holes are not close enough to the edge. Thread a 4-inch piece of string through the hole on the left side. Tie the left side of leather guitar strap into place near the nut on the guitar neck.

  5. 5

Place the guitar strap pin into the end of the guitar body if it is not already in place. Slot the right end of the leather guitar strap over the head of the guitar strap pin, and adjust it to stay in place.
