How to Wire a 30 Amp Service

Running a new service simply means creating a new electrical panel whose power comes from your main electrical panel. For example, if you have a home with a 200-amp service, you may want to run a brand new 30-amp service to your workshop. This way, all the power in your workshop can be controlled from this central location. You can add new circuits easily, or reset tripped breakers without having to walk all the way to your house.

  • 10/3 electric cable
  • Wire cutters
  • 30-amp breaker

    Screw your service panel to the wall where you want it. Be sure the placement meets local building codes in terms of height from the floor and clearance in front of the panel.

    Run a 10-gauge cable from your live panel to the new service panel.

    Split the cable into the individual wires, and strip them down by about an inch, exposing the bare copper. Do this on both ends of the cable.

    Slide the black and red wires into the panel’s hot terminals. The entrance for the panel’s power is either on the top or bottom of the panel, and the hot terminals are right near that entrance, in line with the two rows of breaker slots. Tighten the screws on the terminals to secure the hot wires.

    Slide the white wire into the neutral bus bar terminal, and the ground wire (bare copper) into the grounding bus bar. Tighten both of those screws also.

    Turn off the power to your main breaker panel.

    Slide the 30-amp circuit breaker firmly into the panel.

    Slide the black and red wires into both terminals of the breaker. Slide the white wire into the neutral bus bar, and the ground wire into the grounding bus bar. Tighten all the terminal screws for each wire to secure them in place.

    Turn the power back on to your main panel. Your new breaker panel now has power.

Tips and warnings

  • Be sure the power is really off to your main panel before attempting to place the new breaker, or you could die of electrocution.
