Microsoft Office Word may be downloaded as a trial version and used without a product key. However, the Microsoft Activation Assistant, installed with the software, will prompt you multiple times for the product key. If the application is closed and then reopened, Word will prompt again for the product key. You must answer “No” to these prompts in order to continue with the trial. Most Microsoft trial products run for a specified number of times before the product is disabled or a valid product key is entered. Once the trial limit is reached, the application will not allow creation of new documents and most of the features will be disabled. Normally, you will have 25 accesses to the trial application before the product key must be entered.

  1. 1

Download and install the trial version of Microsoft Office Word (see Resources).

  2. 2

Click the “Microsoft Office” folder from the Windows Start menu.

  3. 3

Click the “Microsoft Word” link. The Microsoft Word application will launch. The Product Key entry page will open. A message will appear indicating that you are not required to enter a product key at this time, but entering the key is recommended.

  4. 4

Click “Continue.” A dialogue box will open with a message about how many trial uses are remaining on the trial license. Again, you are asked if you wish to enter the product key.

  5. 5

Click “No.” The dialogue box and the Product Key page will disappear and you will have full access to the Microsoft Word application.

Tips and warnings

  • The Product Key may be purchased from Microsoft either over the phone or on the Internet. Be sure to obtain a product key before the trial number of uses is depleted.
