How to Wash Sheepskin Rugs

Updated February 21, 2017

Sheepskin rugs are natural, soft and durable, adding a touch of design to any room. Since the sheepskin is a natural textile, the rugs are fairly easy to maintain and care for, By vacuuming regularly with a hose attachment, or shaking the rug off outdoors, you will remove most loose build-up and crumbs. When the sheepskin needs a more thorough cleaning, however, you must use a safe cleaning routine that will not damage the rug.

Place the sheepskin rugs in your washing machine, allowing enough room for the rugs to move freely during the wash process.

Turn on the washing machine with a cold water, large load size cycle.

Pour 1/4 cup of a mild, enzyme-free and bleach-free detergent. Your best options are either a powdered dishwasher detergent, or a laundry detergent designed for use on lingerie.

Run the washing machine for its full wash cycle.

Remove the rugs and stretch them back into shape. Hang-dry the rugs in a shaded area, out of sunlight.
