How to decorate lamp shades with ribbon or braid

Sometimes we overlook the possibilities of lampshades. The truth is, lampshades offer several ways to spice up a room with very little effort. With just a bit of ribbon and trim, you can transform your dull lampshades into eye-catching accent pieces in your home. In addition, you can usually dress up your lampshades with ribbon and braid scraps you already have at home.

  • Fabric glue
  • Needle
  • Thread

Instructions

    Measure around the top and bottom edges of the shade and cut the ribbon or braid to the determined measurement.

    Glue the ribbon or braid along the edges of the shade.

  3. 3

    Glue another, thinner length of ribbon along the edge of the first ribbon for an appealing look.

    Secure one end of the ribbon to the bottom inside of the shade with fabric glue.

    Wrap it around the shade, overlapping the edges.

    Use a small dot of glue on the inside of the shade to secure the end.

    Glue one end of wide ribbon to the top and bottom edges on the outside of the shade.

    Glue evenly spaced ribbon lengths to the shade.

    Use a small dot of glue on the inside of the shade to secure the end.

    Cut a length of ribbon about six times longer than the width.

    Hand-sew a running stitch along one end of the ribbon about a quarter-inch from the edge.

    Pull the thread loosely and evenly to create gathers.

    Cinch ribbon when rosette is tight.

    Turn raw edges of the ribbon to the inside and stitch together. If desired, glue a button to the centre of the rosette.

    Tie ribbon into a bow and trim the ends.

    Use a small dot of fabric glue to attach the bow to the shade.

    Use two lengths of ribbon for a more dramatic look.

Tips and warnings

  • Layer varying lengths of ribbon for a dramatic look. Glue lengths of thinner ribbon down the centre of a larger length of ribbon.
  • Use clothespins to secure ribbon or braid to lampshade while glue dries.
