A window display is a design for merchandise in a store window used to attract customers. The window display often reflects the types of items that are sold in the store. They may portray the sale items, the new items or the holiday items. Some window displays are meant to attract a certain audience of people, such as children. In order to do a window display, look at the window displays of other stores, determine which items you want to feature in the display, determine the audience, sketch a design, ask others for their opinions and then create the display.

Instructions

  1. 1

Look at the window displays of other stores. In order to do a window display, you should examine the window displays of other stores. This will provide you with ideas. For examples, some window displays may only feature a single item, while other window displays may feature a variety of the items within the stores.

  2. 2

Determine which items that you want to feature in the window display. When you do a window display, you have to create your design based on the items that you want to feature. For example, after looking through the various items within your clothing store, you may decide to display the prom dresses.

  3. 3

Determine the audience that the window display is being created for. When you do a window display, you need to consider the audience that the design is created for. For example, if you decide to create a window display of prom dresses, then your audience will be teenage girls.

  4. 4

Sketch the design. In order to do a window display, sketch the design before setting it up at the window. This will make the planning process easier. For example, you may decide to place three prom dresses in the window. You may want to place one at the centre and one at each end. The middle prom dress will be yellow, and the two at the ends will be purple. Along the sides of the window, you will put purple and blue false flowers.

  5. 5

Ask others in the store for their opinions regarding the sketch of the window display. Creating a window display should involve more than one store employee because the window display represents the quality of the store. Therefore, show your design to the other employees. They can offer their advice on how to make the design better.

  6. 6

Create the window display. Using your sketch as a guide, create the window display. Have the other employees help you to do the design.

  7. 7

Evaluate the effectiveness of the window display. After you have had the window display up for a few weeks, discuss the progress of the design. If customers have been coming in the store interested in purchasing prom dresses, then the window display was effective in attracting customers. If people did not come in the store interested in purchasing prom dresses, then you should discuss with the other employees ways in which to make the window display better or what the new design of the window display should be.
