How to Dress in a Rockstar Clothing Style

You don’t have to be a rock star to dress like a rock star—but you do have to have rock star attitude to pull the look off. While there are endless variations on the rock star look, both men’s and women’s looks will invariably be a little worn or scruffy, incorporate some leather--even if it's just a leather cuff-- and most importantly reflect the attitude behind the clothing style, otherwise you run the risk of looking like a try-hard rocker, and that’s just not cool.

  1. 1

Pull on a pair of worn-looking jeans. If you can carry skinny jeans with your body type, then roughed-up skinny jeans are the best; black, faded navy are good colour choices. Jeans work with both the punk-rocker, heavy-rocker and even the "cultured" rocker looks that are paired with a suit jacket or vest.

  2. 2

Put on a T-shirt—the T can be plain white and a little too big for you. Avoid brand logos, but T’s with printed messages are fine. The T should also look a little rough around the edges, like you slept in it, or have had it for years.

  3. 3

Choose your jacket to reflect the type of rock star you are aiming for--leather is always a good choice, and if there are metal studs on a leather biker jacket, for example, you’re onto a winner. A long trench coat suits a more emo-style rocker, while a suit jacket defines a preppy rocker image. The jacket may become your signature clothing item, so make sure you love your jacket and wouldn’t want to go anywhere without it.

  4. 4

Put on some biker boots, Doc Martens or Converse-style sand shoes--leave the laces open or tucked into the sides of the shoes.

  5. 5

Choose some jewellery--many male rockers sport earrings and necklaces, but obviously not too overdone. Think leather studded cuffs, a heavy chain, a single cross hanging from a sleeper earring--silver jewellery wins out over gold for rock star looks.

  6. 6

Add a leather belt, studded preferably, dark shades or white rimmed shades and a loosely-tied necktie. Mix and match your accessories depending on the specific look your aiming for--a preppy rocker may have a perfectly tied necktie, while a hardcore rocker can leave the necktie off altogether. If you’re brave, line your eyes with black eyeliner, like rocker Pete Wentz.

  1. 1

Define your look--all-out tough or a feminine rock chick image? For all out tough, start with tight leather, or black skinny jeans. Pair the jeans look with a T-shirt or singlet. For feminine, put on a baby doll dress.

  2. 2

Wear boots over the jeans or leather--cowboy, soft ankle boots, biker boots and Doc Martens all work. Boots can go with the baby doll dress too, or put on a pair of heels--the higher the better, so long as you can still rock-on in them.

  3. 3

Wrap a leather belt around your waist, clinch it tight. Accessorise with driving gloves--black, red or white, and even only on one hand is fine. Leather cuffs or studded collars work with either look. Put on a black leather biker jacket--shorter jackets are ideal for the female rockstar, as they give the edgy look, without hiding the rest of the outfit.

  4. 4

Pull on lots of bangles on the opposite hand to a cuff or driving glove, long chains will complement either look, as will dangly earrings--try not to do it all together though. If you are going for the loaded neck chains, then tone down the earrings--you don’t want to look over-accessorised.

  5. 5

Apply some black eyeliner--rocker chicks like Courtney Love sported the hurriedly-done make-up look with baby doll dresses for years. Nude lips are fine, or go for fire-engine red if you want a colour, like rock star Gwen Stefani.
