How to Make Different Smiley Faces With the "Control" Key in Email

Updated April 17, 2017

Internet smiley faces, also known as emoticons, are text symbols made to look like a smiling face. These symbols are often made by holding down the "Alt" key while typing a specific number code. You may find this method hard to remember however, and you can't use it on computers that don't have a functioning number pad, such as laptops. Fortunately, you can produce the same smiley faces by using the "Control" key to copy and paste the different smiley faces into an e-mail.

Open your Web browser, and navigate to a text symbol site, such as Text Symbols, FSymbols, or Alt Codes (see the links in the "Resources" section).

Navigate to the emoticons section of the site. On most websites this can be done by clicking either the "Character Chart" button or the "Emoticons" button. Scroll through the list until you find the one you would like to add to an e-mail.

Highlight the smiley face, and press the "Control" and "C" keys simultaneously to copy the image.

Navigate to the email into which you want to insert the smiley face. Press "Control" and "V" simultaneously to paste the image into the email.
