How to Make an IP Camera Work With Skype

Updated February 21, 2017

With more than 400 million users, Skype has revolutionised the way that people communicate. Not only does it allow you to make free voice-over-IP (VOIP) calls, but it also enables you to do free video chats as well. All that you need is an inexpensive camera to see and talk to anybody almost anywhere in the world.

Install your IP camera. Most of them simply require you to install the software and drivers on your computer. You then plug the webcam into the USB port and restart the computer.

Launch Skype by going to the "Start" menu and clicking on the application. Then go to "Tools," "Options" and choose "Video Settings."

Select your camera from the drop-down menu at the top of the screen. Once you've done this, you should now be seeing in your window whatever the camera is seeing. To adjust the settings, click on "Webcam Settings." You will have several options to adjust the lighting and flicker rate. Click "OK" when you are finished.
