You can create animals from towels like these. (colourful towels and orange starfish image by Gina Smith from

Towel animals and decorations can be excellent party favours, baby shower presents or housewarming gifts. Generally, a towel is folded up to look like a particular animal, so your imagination is really the only limit as to what your towel animal will look like. In many cases, if the recipient chooses, they can disassemble the animal and use the towels for their intended purpose. This adorable bear, for example, can be both decorative and functional.

  1. 1

Fold two bath towels in half, lengthwise. Then fold them in half again so that they are folded into quarters. Roll one of the bath towels in a jellyroll style, rolling from one side of the towel to the other. Wrap a rubber band around it so that it stays tight. Place the first towel on top of the second towel and roll the second towel around it. Tie a ribbon that matches the colour of the towels around the rolled towels.

  2. 2

Repeat the entire process using two hand towels, placing a rubber band around the first and a ribbon around the second.

  3. 3

Roll a washcloth from one side to the other, lengthwise. Repeat with a second washcloth.

  4. 4

Place the bath towel layer on a firm working surface. Attach the hand towel layer to the bath towel layer with a small piece of double-sided tape.

  5. 5

Add the legs to the towel bear by placing them on each side of the bath towel layer. Make sure that you keep the edge of the washcloth inward so that it doesn't stick out when you're looking at the bear. Attach the legs to the bear using double-sided tape.

  6. 6

Fold a washcloth in half and then roll it up jellyroll style. Repeat this with three more washcloths, for a total of four.

  7. 7

Attach one rolled washcloth to each side of the centre of the bear, near where the two main rolls join together, using double-sided tape.

  8. 8

Create the ears of the bear by attaching two more rolled-up washcloths, one on each side, to the top of the hand towel roll. Ensure that the ears remain in place by using double-sided tape.

  9. 9

Decorate your towel bear as you please. Attach a small bow to the bear's neck as a necklace or insert a small sprig of flowers into one of the arms. Use small ribbon roses, available from many stores, for the eyes and nose of the bear.
