Purchasing a printer is only part of your cost for printing documents. A bigger costs usually involves purchasing ink cartridges. Purchase ink refill kits online or at some office supply stores and refill ink cartridges when printed documents begin to appear faint.

  1. 1

Turn the empty ink cartridge upside down on the paper towels. You should see grey or black rubber seals on the bottom of the cartridge.

  2. 2

Insert the rivets that came with the ink refill kit into the seals or cover them with the aluminium tape included in the ink refill kit. Turn the cartridge back over.

  3. 3

Locate the filling holes beneath the ink cartridge label. The black cartridge filling hole is near the centre of the cartridge. On the colour cartridge, cyan is at the left centre, magenta is in the middle and yellow is at the right centre. On the photo colour cartridge, the filling holes run left to right in this order: cyan, photo cyan, magenta, photo magenta and yellow.

  4. 4

Fill the syringe that came with the ink refill kit with 10ml of black or 5ml of colour ink.

  5. 5

Carefully inject ink into the correct hole. Some ink may escape when the cartridge sponge is full.

  6. 6

Wipe off any excess ink and seal the filling holes with the tape to prevent leakage.

  7. 7

Remove rivets or tape from the bottom of the cartridge.

  8. 8

Replace the cartridge in the printer.

  9. 9

Run one to three cleaning cycles using the printer software.

Tips and warnings

  • Each Epson T040120 ink cartridge contains a chip that detects when the cartridge runs low. To continue using the cartridge, you may need to reset the chip with a chip resetter. Chip resetters can often be purchased from refill kit vendors.
  • Most printer manufacturers recommend replacing ink cartridges with new ones when they run low instead of refilling them.
